There is no excuse for not getting your child started preparing for college at an early age. Whether it be in providing your child with a fully paid tuition or if it is simply giving them all the help that they need to get the grades that they have to have to get in, all parents are preparing their child for college from the beginning. So what exactly do parents need to do? It is actually very easy - read the three tips below and in less than five minutes you will know just what to do.
Tip One. Preparing for college is commensurate to preparing your finances. For younger kids, college tuition plans would be a good option to try. That is, if your state offers them, or if you could get them from a lender. If the kids are older, help them to get the scholarships that are out there and help them to find the financial aid that they or you need. You may want to take out a home equity loan and tackle this problem head-on, but it is far more prudent to seek out other alternatives.
Second Tip. You want your child to prepare for college in terms of academics. This is a process that usually begins when the kids are at a very young age. However, too many parents are content to let their children learn about culture through their text books, and are content to let them listen to their bubblegum pop heroes and watch their candy-coated throwaway television favorites. Take them to museums, musicals and other intellectual aspects. As far as their study plan is concerned, it has to be conducive to learning and better grades/SAT scores. Put rules and rewards in place for good behavior, good grades and success. Offer your help as needed, there will always be times when your kid may struggle.
Third Tip. Preparing for college is also a process of developing emotional readiness. Of course your beloved little angels won't be that little for long, and once they reach the right age, they will reach a point when they can make their share of mistakes or miss the mark at times - these things will happen and you need to be there to help them learn from these incidents. Social skills are also a must to be developed for the next level. Give them positive enforcement and reinforcement as you motivate them towards success.
There are two people responsible for all this - Mommy and Daddy. If you were lucky to attend college, you may or may not remember how easy it was to prepare for college on both ends - am I right?
